Hammamet

The old fortress on the seashore protects luxury hotels among the orange,
lemon, jasmine groves and orchards. Everywhere - the realm of Tunisian
architecture. Hammamet - haven of beauty, sunshine and
melancholia. Flaubert, Maupassant, Wilde, Churchill, were conquered by his
charm.

Hammamet - it is the oldest in the country's
tourist center, giving Tunisia, 25 percent of all tourism revenues.
Hammamet has a unique appearance. All resorts Tunis green and have
beautiful parks, but even among them Hammamet stands out for its lush
gardens. The main principle of urban planning in Hammamet - at home should
not exceed the height of cypresses. Therefore Hammamet - the most graphic
illustration of the expression «buried in verdure» ,
for which, in fact, can hardly see the city buildings and hotels.
Therefore, in 647, Tunisia became easy prey for the Arab conquerors, who
for many centuries strengthened its rule. Then followed the period of
Ottoman domination (1574 - 1881 gg.), Which is already in our time over a
French protectorate (1881 - 1956 gg.).

Hammamet is situated on the coast, 70 km south-east of Tunisia.
Hammamet Resort zone stretched about 14 km along the seashore. From north
to adjoin the small resort town of Nabeul. South as part of Hammamet -
Hammamet Sud or Yasmine-Hammamet - a new tourist area, which a few years
to grow into independent prestigious resort.

Hammamet has a long history that goes back to the period of Roman
rule. In the vicinity of Hammamet archeologists discovered the ruins of
Roman villas and baths, which indicates that these places have been
popular for recreation and amusement since ancient times. The name of the
city, probably dates back to the Arabic word "hammam", that means "baths".
In place of modern Hammamet in the Middle Ages arose populous Arab city.
This still resembles a fortress Ribat, towering on the waterfront in the
city center.
